Since the Government revealed in July that it was working on a policy that would set out broad criteria to decide which "viable" communities should get funding priority, there has been widespread disquiet in the Aboriginal community about the move. One prominent Aboriginal leader went so far as to warn the Government it risked committing "cultural genocide" by forcing Aboriginals away from their homelands under its plans to strip funding from remote communities deemed unviable.

And this month in its first report to the Government, the Indigenous Implementation Board weighed into the debate, saying development of the policy had to have input from Aboriginals at a regional level.
Housing and Works Minister Troy Buswell acknowledged earlier this year that determining the criteria would be difficult and would require considerable consultation with the State's 286 Aboriginal communities and the Federal Government.

Here in the West, we think of music as entertainment, or an accompaniment to entertainment. Most of us can't remember life without phonograph records, cassette tapes or Compact Discs and the artists we all have listened to on them. The great majority of radio stations exist to play music, and there is hardly a minute on TV - other than news shows - that doesn't have theme music, background music or commercial music.

But as much as we enjoy different kinds of music, it is all of one purpose: to entertain. We have The Music Business and The Entertainment Business. Why else would we listen to music besides entertainment?

In the past, and in other parts of the world today, there are definitely other reasons. The classical Master Beethoven, for example, was justly famous for being able to evoke specific emotions in his listeners, and wrote pieces that we still listen to today to evoke joy, sadness, loss and return. His piano sonata Les Adieux couldn't be clearer if he had written a short story: two lovers part, they experience their loneliness, but are joyfully reunited in the last movement. The ability of music to evoke emotions is its first and most obvious power, and we shall return to it again.

Physical and mental effects

Some types of music can relax us. After a stressful work day, classical music, certain types of jazz, or our favorite ballad singer can physically relax our bodies and distract our minds from the cares of the day - at least for a while. On the other hand, loud, fast music with a strong beat can exhilarate (or bother) us. In fact, sometimes we may prefer one kind of music or artist, and at other times that's the last thing we want to listen to.

So we have all experienced music's physical and mental effects on us at one time or another. In fact, the mental effect is so strong at times, a few lines from a song can keep running through our minds despite our efforts to ignore them or make them stop.

There are other ways music affects us emotionally. One way can be most clearly demonstrated by movie music. Music signals us when something scary, threatening or ominous is about to happen. If you close your eyes in an action, horror or thriller movie, you can pretty much tell what's happening on the screen by the music alone. The same is true for a romance. Film composers such as John Williams get paid big money for their ability to shift your emotions from moment to moment. Movie theme music - such as Williams' Star Wars theme - can make us practically march out of the theater, our shoulders thrown back, determined to vanquish our own foes. (And sometimes we just hope one will show up right then so we can spring into action.) Our self-confidence has been affected, and it is as much due to the movie music as the movie story and visuals.

So what's going on between us and this music? What is the emotional hook music has on us all about? There is something going on here besides sound waves, the mechanism of the ear, and synapses firing in the brain. Apparently, music and mood are intimately connected in some non-physical way.

This is not meant to be political...

Nor is it meant to make absolute generalizations...

Some teachers do really well with large class sizes....but don't do well with small ones. This happens because they can draw in a large group of students and create an intimate setting much like a great speaker can draw in a large audience. Other teachers have the complete opposite talent. They do a spectacular job with a small class size because they need to make personal connections with every child in their class.

It depends on the teacher, the group of students, the subject being taught and the expectations in the classroom. There is no one size fits all answer to class size.

For many teachers, having large class sizes often means that teachers cannot do inquiry-based learning or take risks to include more innovation in their classrooms. Large class sizes lead to stress and high anxiety. Most teachers clearly cannot do as much with large classes that they could do with small ones...but what should be considered a large class size?

According to this Huffington Post article, the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) "contract (N.Y.C.) establishes limits for class size as follows:

For full disclosure, I think those class size guidelines are too high. I taught primary education in a few city schools. I had 30 first graders my first year as a public school teacher and had an aide for about 45 minutes a day.  The second and third years brought close to the same numbers.

However, I also did not have to worry about Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) and the state did not have HEDI (Highly effective, Effective, Developing, Ineffective) scores yet. It doesn't mean I took teaching less seriously, but there was less pressure.

We look back on things more fondly than they were, so I hope that my classes were fully engaged, even when I had high numbers of students. Unfortunately, I don't think that was always the case. With a class filled with first graders, I think sometimes I was just happy to make it through the day. But was it my class size or how I approached the size of the class I had?
